Tiffany Studios produced a line of geometric leaded glass shades to appeal to customers who wanted a Tiffany Lamp with a perhaps more restrained pattern or color palette.
While today this design is commonly referred to as the Acorn, the model number associated with this shade was listed as "Vine Border, Plain Squares, Dome" in Tiffany Studios’ 1906 price list. The Vine Border motif was adapted to leaded glass shades in a variety of sizes and shapes, ranging from 14 to 24 inches in diameter. The Vine Border became one of the more popular lines of the geometric shades.
In this example, a domed shade is formed by a grid of rectangular pieces of Tiffany glass in a golden orange color with heavy mottling. This background is bisected near the lower rim by a horizontal frieze of meandering leaves in alternating positions, articulated in mottled Tiffany glass in a contrasting shade of green.
Both the shade and original bronze base of this Tiffany lamp are signed.
