This bowl in the Ariel technique was designed by Ingeborg Lundin for Orrefors in Sweden. Lundin was the first woman to design for Orrefors and also the youngest member of the team at 26 years old. Her design work is characterized by fresh images and ideas that make use of glass’s inherent exuberance.
This Ariel is thick and heavy, characteristic of the technique’s creator Edvin Öhrström. The geometric design is created with trapped air bubbles using the Swedish overlay technique. The bowl is made in two steps: first a thick blank of clear glass with grey on the outside is formed and carved away, creating a recessed geometric pattern. Next, the blank is again heated and attached to the glassblowing pipe, where a clear bubble of glass is wrapped over the outside, trapping air in the recesses.
The geometric series designed by Lundin was introduced circa 1965 and has remained popular among collectors of Swedish glass.
