This original Tiffany Lamp features Tiffany Studios’ 20-inch diameter Arrowhead Shade with fine glass selection particularly in the textured white flowers and the blue toned glass utilized throughout the background.
The conical shade depicts a series of large stylized tri-lobed Arrowhead leaves in richly mottled green glass, rising from thin green stems, forming a band around the middle of the shade. These angular leaves are interspersed with clusters of white flowers, each with three round petals articulated in rippled Tiffany glass, giving the petals a sculptural quality, with bright yellow glass forming the flower centers. Behind the floral composition, the background glass is formed by various shades and types of blue Tiffany Glass ranging from a translucent rippled glass used throughout the lower edge and in the geometric border row, likely representing water, to an ombre effect of aqua and sky blues near the crown of the shade.
This lamp features an original bronze Tyler lamp base in rich brown patina with four slender arms which support the shade.
Both the shade and base of this authentic Tiffany lamp are signed.
Like many plants found at the edge of a pond or bend of a river, where one might find hovering dragonflies, the Arrowhead (sagittaria latifolia) was frequently depicted in the art of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The plant’s broad tri-lobed leaves and petite white flowers were repeatedly translated by designers at Tiffany Studios into blown Favrile Glass and bronze “fancy goods,” as well as Tiffany Lamp bases and a small series of leaded glass shades like this one.
