This original Tiffany Lamp pairs a particularly fine Daffodil Shade with a rare early electrified lamp base design.
The Daffodil was one of the most popular leaded glass shade designs offered by Tiffany Studios. The flower was a personal favorite of Louis Comfort Tiffany who broadly incorporated daffodils into both the landscape and architecture of Laurelton Hall, in addition to designs for Tiffany windows. Tiffany directed Clara Driscoll, head of the Women’s Glass Cutting Department at Tiffany Studios who was also the talented designer responsible for many of the most iconic Tiffany lamps, to produce a leaded glass Daffodil shade as early as 1900. In the early 20th century, Driscoll’s initial designs were adapted into leaded glass shade models in a wide range of shapes and sizes.
The daffodils on this 14-inch diameter domed shade are articulated in mottled Tiffany glass in shades of rich yellow accented by deeper hues of orange; the pieces of glass used for the trumpets of the flowers were carefully selected to allude to a sense of depth and three-dimensionality. Below and around the flowers, spiky leaves rising from the lower edge are formed by mottled glass in varied shades of green, several with inclusions of blue. A single horizontal border row along the upper edge in addition to two bands along the lower edge are articulated in mottled pale blue glass. The floral motif stands out against a background of exceptional heavily mottled salmon pink Tiffany glass.
The shade is paired with a rare early electrified lamp base with a telescopic stem, allowing the height of the shade to be adjusted. This design, featuring a splayed tripod base with spherical details, is related to an early Tiffany candlestick model. This example retains the original rich brown patina.
Both the shade and base of this authentic Tiffany lamp are signed with firm’s marks and model numbers. The shade features an original perforated heat cap in matching patina.
