This original Tiffany Lamp is known as the "Drophead Dragonfly" Lamp, a variation on the popular Dragonfly shades that were designed by “Tiffany Girl” Clara Driscoll at the end of the 19th century.
Tiffany’s Dragonfly Lamps were extremely popular when the pattern was introduced and the company produced a large variety of models depicting dragonflies. The 22-inch diameter “Drophead” model is one of the largest, and one of the rare shades for Tiffany Lamps which feature an irregular border in which the heads and wings of the dragonflies form a dramatic lower edge.
In this example of the shade, a series of dragonflies with vibrant blue bodies and wings form the lower edge of the shade. The eyes of the dragonflies are formed by rounded pressed Tiffany Glass jewels in an eye-catching shade of teal. These winged insects are framed by a selection of pressed ovoid Tiffany Glass “jewels” in a variety of complementary shades of golden yellow, accented by a background of streaky Tiffany Glass in shades of yellow and cream.
This shade has been paired with a bronze Decorated Cushion Table Base with its original gilt patina, resting on six feet, with a telescoping stem allowing for the height of the shade to be adjusted.
Both the shade and base of this iconic Tiffany Lamp are signed.
