This panel would have been one of several shown to prospective clients at Tiffany’s Ecclesiastical Department, where the company would display panels depicting a selection of available borders, patterns, and color palettes to outfit their church, chapel or mausoleum.
After the company closed its doors in the early 1930s, these sample panels were among the contents of the showroom and studio space that were sold off in a series of liquidation sales. Mrs. Nassau acquired this piece and several others directly from the original buyer.
This particular sample panel depicts an interlace design articulated in transparent foil-backed orange glass against a background of opaque marbled blue glass tesserae.
This early and rare piece remains in its original frame, and features the Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company mark on the reverse as well as the handwritten label “INTERLACE.”
