In addition to more elaborate floral and pictorial designs, Tiffany Studios produced a variety of geometric leaded glass shades for Tiffany lamps in an effort to appeal to a range of clients.
Introduced around 1910, the “Jeweled Fish Scale” Shade highlights the rich quality of Tiffany glass. In this example of the shade, each piece of glass forming the geometric pattern of seemingly overlapping scales was selected from a single sheet of heavily mottled Tiffany glass in a golden-amber coloration with touches of deep orange, accented by a narrow band of pressed rounded glass “jewels” in a dark amber color that encircle the shade near the crown. The variations in opacity and coloration contained within each piece of glass enlivens the simple motif.
The shade rests on a “Tyler” Lamp Base with chased pod decoration on the flared foot and stem in rich brown-green patina, and is topped with an original reticulated heat cap in matching patina.
Both the shade and base of this authentic Tiffany lamp are signed.
