The Laburnum was one of the rare designs for Tiffany Lamp shades which featured an irregular lower border, a highly naturalistic detail which enhanced the beauty of the shade while also requiring a higher level of technical prowess to produce. Offered by Tiffany Studios in two sizes, the Laburnum is one of the shades known to be designed by Clara Driscoll, head of Tiffany's Women's Glass Cutting Department and the creative genius behind many of the most iconic Tiffany Lamps.
This example of the 22-inch diameter Laburnum Shade depicts pendant blossoms formed by tiny hand-cut pieces of mottled yellow Tiffany Glass, each piece selected so that the mottling gives the effect of three-dimensionality. These panicles cascade from a series of intertwining striated brown branches with vibrant green pointed leaves formed by both vibrant streaky green glass as well as sections of “confetti” or “foliage” glass in shades of variegated green. Tiffany Studios specially developed “foliage” glass to give a heightened sense of realism to their leaded glass designs. The yellow blossoms and green leaves are accented by the background of deep blue striated glass with variegated striations in shades of purple, pink and white.
The shade is paired with an original bronze Junior Floor Lamp with six feet.
Both the shade and base of this authentic Tiffany Lamp are signed.
