Tiffany Studios’ Ecclesiastical Department became an important economic engine in Louis Comfort Tiffany’s design empire after the Tiffany Chapel won a series of medals at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
Artist and designer Frederick Wilson served as the head of Tiffany's Ecclesiastical Department for nearly 30 years. In addition to commissions for leaded glass Tiffany Windows and Tiffany Glass mosaics for altars and chapels in churches around the country, the Ecclesiastical Department would often produce customized decorative metalwork including altar crosses, candlesticks, monstrances, and urns and vases.
This monumental bronze Floor Vase in original patina bears the monogram “SJ” in gothic lettering, harmonizing with the relief decoration.
