This monumental glazed stoneware vase by Edmond Lachenal is an exceptional example of his work from a high point of his career in the 1890s, and is impressive in its unusual scale as well as the fine quality of the glazed decoration.
The entirety of the surface of this baluster-form vase is decorated with a motif of flowering Hawthorn against a soft blue-green ground, with some of the white flowers articulated in detail while others are smaller and less defined, seeming to recede into the distance.
The majority of the vase is finished in a matte glaze typical of Lachenal’s work in the 1890s, though this piece is notable for the additional utilization of a glossy white glaze for several of the flowers, offering a sense of depth and naturalism to the composition.
The vase features the artist’s signature inscribed in the glaze on the foot, as well as an impressed artist's mark on the underside.
