This pair of playful blown glass “Pulcini” by Alessandro Pianon marry bright colors, naturalistic forms, and expert craftsmanship. Pianon's "Pulcini" — Italian for "little chick" — are emblematic of Mid-Century Modern Italian design.
The elongated bodies are supported by a pair of delicate but sturdy copper legs with splayed feet. The birds' plumage is represented by three rows of cirulcar patterns in ultramarine and crimson dappling the lower body and tail.
Their striking eyes are made with the ancient murrine process in which layered colored-glass canes are sliced, revealing intricate patterns which form the pupils and colored irises. The murrine eyes and pulled beaks convey lively expressions.
Born in Venice, Pianon studied architecture before joining Murnano’s renowned Vistosi Glassworks in 1956. These charming glass birds are part of larger series, works that showcase his command of glass techniques and spirited imagination.
These "Pulcini" are offered individually or as a pair.
