This Tiffany Studios Desk Lamp features a particularly fine Favrile Glass shade paired with a rare desk base with inset enamel decoration and silver plated finish.
Tiffany Studios began producing solid blown Favrile Glass shades for some of the first Tiffany Lamps designed in the 1890s, expanding the available range of sizes and shapes throughout the early 20th century to pair with a series of lamp bases designed for boudoir and desk lamps. These blown Tiffany glass shades were predominantly produced in four colors: gold, green, red, and blue, with a selection of options for surface decoration.
This shade, formed by deep green glass decorated with an all-over decoration in the Wave motif formed by bands of silvery iridescent glass, is characterized by shimmering surface iridescence in richly saturated hues ranging from emerald green through deep blue and purple. The shade features subtle vertical ribbing, the thicker portions creating a pleasing striped effect when the lamp is lit, while the interior of the shade was cased in white to allow for brighter illumination.
Along the rounded food, this rare desk lamp base features inset enamel decoration in variegated shades of blue with hints of purple throughout, harmonizing with the shade. Tiffany Studios offered sterling silver plating for an additional 20% on top of the base price of the base.
Both the shade and base of this authentic Tiffany lamp are signed, the base with firm’s mark and model number.
