This rare original “Lava” Vase by Tiffany Studios is an unusual variation on the theme which sports a series of decorative iridescent “polka dots” instead of the thickly applied drips of glass that are more commonly seen in this line of Tiffany Glass.
The golden drops and alternating horizontal bands of iridescent and textured glass which adorn this vase are an exercise in restraint, in contrast with many of the company’s more typical vases, often decorated with elaborate art nouveau swirls and swags, or the impressionistic paperweight line with its rich botanical references. Tiffany and his glassblowers produced several variants of “Lava” vases, all of which lean into the modern art and design movements which began to take shape over the course of the 20th century, more so than the majority of the firm’s contemporaneous blown glass production.
The form of this original Tiffany vase, with its low circular foot and irregular vertical sides, evokes hand-thrown antique Japanese Raku tea bowls; Louis Comfort Tiffany was an avid collector of Japanese decorative arts and design, and many of his most unusual designs took inspiration from his wide-ranging collections.
