We are thrilled to offer this exceptional original Tiffany Lamp for sale for the first time since it was purchased directly from Lillian Nassau in the early 1960s.
This Tiffany Lamp features a rare 18-inch diameter Oriental Poppy shade depicting a dense field of oriental poppies in various stages of development. The large open flowers are articulated in mottled and variegated golden-orange Tiffany Glass, carefully cut from a single sheet and arranged to suggest the sculptural form of each individual petal. The centers of the open flowers are formed by translucent glass in swirling tones of deep purple and blue. Near the crown of the shade, both nascent flower buds and seed pods are formed by purple and blue glass with additional streaks of teal and green throughout, framed by a background of creamy yellow glass. Along the lower margin of the shade, mottled green leaves and thin blue-green stems rise from “soil” at the base of the shade and are framed by three horizontal border rows in coordinating earthy tones; several of the drooping and open poppies give the illusion of hanging over or between these border rows, playfully enlivening the shade.
This shade is paired with an original bronze Tiffany Lamp base in rich brown-green patina, harmonizing with the glass utilized throughout the shade.
Both the shade and base of this authentic Tiffany Lamp are signed.
An example of this shade depicting red poppies is in the permanent collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art (2018.262).
