This impressive vase by Quezal features a rare sterling silver mount by George W. Shiebler & Co.
The low, wide body of the vase is formed by opalescent creamy white glass decorated with a wide pulled feather motif in striated green, framed by a thick border of gold iridescent glass characterized by purplish hues with hooked detail.
The polished sterling silver collar with curved flared rim features a band of decoration at the base of stylized flowers in low relief encircled by coiling vines and leaves in the Art Nouveau taste, some of the flowers and vines forming an irregular lower edge. The style of the mount is unusual for Quezal, whose rare silver mounted vases typically featured a thin overlay as opposed to the heavy decorated collar seen on this piece.
Quezal Art Glass Company was formed in 1902 by two glassworkers previously employed at Louis Comfort Tiffany’s furnaces in Corona, Queens. There are very few examples of collaborations between Quezal and Shiebler, an American silver firm known for producing high quality artistic silver at the turn of the twentieth century.
The sterling silver is fully hallmarked; the vase is inscribed with signature on the underside.
