In the Zodiac Desk Set, rustic interpretations of the astrological signs in low relief are framed by medallions formed by a heavy interlace design. The Zodiac Set was one of the most popular desk sets designed and sold by Tiffany Studios, and was in production for nearly three decades, likely until the company ceased operations in the early 1930s.
In “Desk Sets and Useful Articles,” a sales brochure distributed by Tiffany Studios around 1910, the company described the Zodiac set as being “ornamented with a primitive design rudely modelled … very dignified and simple in character.” The set could be finished in green, brown or gold patina. The Zodiac set featured approximately thirty pieces in total, including two sizes of clock, of which this is the larger.
This example of the desk clock features an etched doré patina with polychrome enamel accents on the medallions. This example is signed on the underside and features works by Chelsea Clock Co. and a Tiffany Studios marked clock face. This example retains its original winding key in matching patina and enamel.
