Wharton Esherick (1887-1970) was a sculptor and pioneer of the Studio Craft Movement and American modern design. Esherick, influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, worked mostly with wood, designing furniture, interiors, and buildings. He is best known for his sensitively hand-carved wood furniture in free-form curvilinear shapes. This music stand is from an edition of 24, originally designed in 1960. Esherick was one of the first American studio furniture artists to portray the music stand as functional art in a non-traditional manner.
