This original Tiffany Lamp features a rare 12-inch diameter Dogwood Shade paired with an equally rare Penguin Base.
Tiffany Studios produced a range of leaded glass shades for Tiffany lamps depicting the flowering dogwood, including hanging shades and floor lamps, all of which were likely based on initial designs by Clara Driscoll, head of the Women’s Glass Cutting Department at Tiffany Studios and the artist who conceived of some of the most iconic Tiffany lamp designs.
The 12-inch diameter domed shade is one of the rarest of the Dogwood shade models, with only a handful of known examples — one of which is held by The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass (N.86.GL.01a–c).
This example of the shade depicts an asymmetrical composition of thin branches laden with large white dogwood flowers, with each of the flowers articulated in a distinct selection of white Tiffany Glass in a range of textures and effects, including mottled and rippled. The flowers are surrounded by vibrant green foliage which coordinates with the thin borders at the upper and lower edges. The transparent background glass in a deep shade of blue evokes a clear sky on a bright spring day.
The shade is paired with a rare bronze Penguin lamp base with rich brown-green patina, which supports the shade on four thin bronze arms.
